Sonata #1 from the "Quattro Sonate Notturne a due Vioini e Basso"
for three oboes
by Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) - German composer, eighteenth child of Johann Sebastian Bach, and the youngest of his eleven sons, also known as the "London Bach"
I. Andante
II. Minuetto & Rondeaux
The Sonata presented here is the first of four from JC Bach's "Quattro Sonate Notturne (WB30-35) of 1780. They are creative and inventive, and although written for strings, work very well for the similar combination of three oboes. The original keys have been retained as have all dynamics. The editor has inserted a few parenthetical dynamics to balance the performance of this arrangement. Likewise, most of the articulations are original to the Bach manuscript. One of two obvious note mistakes by the copyist have been corrected without comment. Metronome markings are only suggestions from the editor. The performers are encouraged to adapt the piece to suit their own personal standards and preferences.
