This work is based on the Classical Sonata Allegro form. Written in one through-composed movement, there are, nevertheless, all of the standard forms: and opening allegro appassionato with repeated sections and coda, a Tema (exposition), Vivace (Scherzo and Trio), Adagio molto sostenuto, and a final Allegro assai, a contrapunctal Finale in a free-form fugue style.
