Serenade

I. Presto
II. Andante
III. Allegretto
This work is in three movements, each of which offers technical and rhythmic challenges to the players. In the second movements, Andante, the oboe is given a secondary melody entitled Salt-Brook. This was written by the composer's school friend, Ruth King, as a song with guitar accompaniment. Its incorporation into the Serenade commemorates happy hours of music-making many years ago. The third movement, Allegretto, has immediate melodic appeal with its cheeky theme interspersed with episodes in compound time set against other parts still in simple time. The Serenade appeals to both players an audience and is a welcome addition to the repertoire for this combination.
