Theme and Variations, op. 23
for English horn and piano
by Stanislas Verroust (1814-1863)
Edited by Bruce Gbur. The Theme and Variations is one of two works Verroust composed for English horn. An extensive introduction in g minor leads to the sixteen-measure theme in G Major. The first and second variations are preceeded by a four-measure bridge. Verroust does not change the tonal center of the three variations by provides added interest by expanding the final bridge to seven measures. The third variations lasts the expected sixteen measure, but takes the performers into a slower seven-measure section. This, in turn, leads into a nineteen-measure coda that brings the piece to a bravura conclusion.
