Sonata for bassoon and piano
by Ulysses Kay (1917-1995)
Kay, one of the most important African-American composers of concert music in the generation following William Grant Still, finished this work in 1941 while studying with Paul Hindemith. The work is a single sonata movement, but does not necessarily fit the expected structural requirements of that most academic of forms. Kay published it in manuscript form in 1952, but withdrew it a few years later.
