From the composer:
"From Their Mountain Fastnesses" is a phrase from the novel The Cossacks by Leo Tolstoy. The book describes the warlike tribes of the Caucasus Mountains who lived in caves along cliffs. From this vantage point, they were able to spot potential dangers from a great distance. In writing this piece, I was naturally influenced by my involvement with klezmer music, which contains some elements of modal Near Eastern Music.
This edition comes with three performance scores.
