Prairie Portraits
for English horn and piano
by Patricia Morehead - Canadian-born composer
Prairie Portraits is an expression of the composer's love for the wide open prairies of her homeland - Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Manitoba, with its almost always sunny skies (be the temperature 90 degrees above zero in the short summers or 35 below zero during the long winters), gave her great freedom of spirit. Chicago, Illinois, Ms. Morehead's current home, is for her just a much bigger Winnipeg surrounded by farmland as was her hometown up north. Prairie Portraits was commissioned and premiered by Carolyn Hove of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for her master class in Muncie, Indiana, July 2010. It was inspired by an excerpt from the poem "Abe Lincoln in The Landscape of Chance" by Nina Corwin.
3 movements with moderate technique.
