Xin Liu studied at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1982. He completed additional studies at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music in Russia, graduating in 1996, and in 2005, completed a degree in conducting from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Ukraine. His compositions include works for orchestra, string ensemble, wind ensemble, and instrumental solos.
“Playing at the Riverside,” was composed in April 2013, especially for the 2013 National Professional Conservatory Bassoon Competition of China. The music is based on a Chongqing folk tune and vividly depicts a playful scene along the Yangtze and the Jialing River.
The music is tonal and contains moderately difficult technical demands.
