Gaspard (sic Kaspar) Johann Kummer (1795–1870) was best known as a German flutist, educator, and composer. He was born in 1795 in Erlau in Thuringia. Kummer and taught himself the flute while also learning violin, horn, trumpet, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, contrabassoon, and cello.
Kummer studied music theory from the cantor of Schleusingen, Gottlob Abraham Stäps. From 1835, he worked as a flutist at the chapel of the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and took over the direction of their orchestra in 1854.
His published compositions ran to over 150 opus numbers, mostly involving the flute, but also included works for other instruments with which he had a decent familiarity.
His students included Friedrich Kiel (1821-1885) and Felix Draeseke (1835-1913) both of whom were prolific composers during the late Romantic period. Draeseke’s Kleine Suite, Op. 87 for English Horn and Piano is published by TrevCo Music Publishing.
Kummer died in May 1870, in Coburg.
Kummer’s first name appears as both Gaspard and Kaspar, depending on the publisher and publication. Also, he should not be confused with his contemporary, bassoonist and composer Gotthel Kummer, the majority of whose compositions are for the bassoon. They both sometimes used the appellation G. Kummer which, understandably, leads to present day confusion as to the correct provenance. The editor is quite certain that this Concertino for Bassoon and Orchestra, Opus 27, is by Gaspar, based on the original printed cover.
The piano reduction is by the editor, as none was made at the time of the original publication, ca. 1826.
This piece is also available for bassoon and orchestra HERE.
