IV. Entree et Danse des Bergers (2:20) Entrance and Dance of the Shepherds
Pastorales de Noel is a gentle and restrained work which demonstrates the quality of Jolivet's work, but also reflects that period of WWII when France was under occupation. Each movement depicts a different part of the Christmas story, starting with the first, l'Etoile. The flute and bassoon begin in duet, followed by the entrance of the harp to bring the movement to a close. The second is quieter, expressing the Magi's journey through the desert. The Virgin and the Child is like a lullaby and the piece finishes on a joyful dance to express happiness and devotion.
The harp part doubles as the score.
