A Russian Fantasy in c minor
for woodwind quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon
by Marco A. Jimenez (b. 2003) - American composer, born in Miami

A Russian Fantasy in c minor should be played with great freedom of expression, and artistic liberties should be taken generously. The piece is essentially a conglomerate of disparate sections strung together by transitions, and it is therefore most imperative that the underlying structure of the piece comes out in performance, so that unity is given to a piece that might otherwise sound disjointed. Russian Fantasy was inspired by the landscapes, mood, and history of Russia. The composer hopes to have captured some element of the Russian spirit, form the bleak and despondent winter to the vibrant and hopeful summer, from the bustle and cynicism of the inner city to the simplicity and joviality of rural Russia, from the bitter lamentations of Russian folk songs to the frenzied triumph of imperial marches.
