Endsong
for solo bassoon
by Graham Sheen (b. 1952) - English bassoonist, composer, and pedagogue
Endsong was commissioned and first performed by Sally Ann Bartholomew in 1995. The single movement grows as a dialogue between the two constituents of its opening phrases; the wide intervals and large leaps, and their obverse the semitone. It owes much to the spirit of improvised musical genres and was inspired in part by my daughter Katy's improvised 'songs'. She (then aged four) maintained that these could never be repeated because they were endsongs.
-Graham Sheen 1999
