An impressive Romantic work with fine effects for the various instrumental combinations. Ludwig Thuille was born in Bolzano, Italy. His family as of French origin having lived in Savoy near Montblanc, where there flows a little river known as "La Thuille". He received his musical education in Innsbruck and Munich and his unusual talent won him recognition at an early age. At twenty-two, he was appointed professor at the Munich Conservatory
The present Sextet was composed in 1885-1887 and met with instantaneous success. When Richard Strauss heard it he urged the composer to submit it to a competition in Vienna for the award of the Beethoven prize.
