Bicinia Germanica: 10 two-part contrapuntal studies on melodies of the 15th and 16th century
for two bassoons
Edited and arranged by Frank Nieuwenhuis
The Bicinium is a composition of two parts which is based on polyphonic theory of composition. The terms is generally associated with vocally-thought two part technique, which was very popular in the Renaissance and in which both parts are equal. It is not bound on a particular form. Apart from its artistic significance, the bicinium had an educational function: it was the simplest study material for composers, singers, and instrumentalists who wanted to educate themselves in polyphonic writing and performance.
