"Contravent" is an old English word and means contradict or deny. The opening theme will be "contravented" in the following six episodes. The different episodes attempt to reflect some of the various whims and qualities of the instrument. This work was composed in May 1998, and is dedicated to Hank Skolnik, who premiered the piece in 1998 at the Conference of the International Double Reed Society in Phoenix, Arizona.
