Harkening (2016)
for unaccompanied bassoon
by Ryan Hare - American composer and bassoonist
Dedicated to Daniel Lipori, professor of bassoon at Central Washington University. Composed as the prize composition for the bassoonist who gave the first performance of the piece Bachalicious for solo bassoon, Harkening was conceived with the restriction that all of its melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and formal language would be restricted to that which would plausibly be in use by a leading composer of the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. In other words, a late Romantic tonal vocabulary. The reason for this is largely the result of the composer having taught chromatic tonal harmony in core music theory classes and graduate seminars for many years, and the composer's great admiration for the works of Mahler, Bruckner, and Strauss.
