ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Reed Hanna is quickly becoming a noteworthy new voice in the double reed community as a performer, composer, and educator. In addition to playing principal bassoon with the Augusta (GA) Symphony he plays regularly with many other orchestras in the southeast. He is also an avid soloist and chamber musician, and has performed recitals and taught masterclasses across the United States, including performances of his original music at conferences of the International Double Reed Society in AZ, GA, FL, CO, and Grenada, Spain.

As a composer, his compositions have become known among wind players for their interesting and imaginative musical ideas that challenge performers and captivate audiences. Reed believes that music is the most fun when performed with friends, and Concert Suite for Two Bassoons and Clarinet was premiered in July 2024 at the International Double Reed Society Annual Conference in Flagstaff, AZ alongside fellow Augusta Symphony musicians Joy Hoffman (bassoon) and Andrew Warwick (clarinet). His first album of original works, Carte Blanche, was released in 2019 and features collaborations with Augusta Symphony musicians Taylor Massey (clarinet) and Arthur Ross (viola).

In addition to performing and composing, Reed is passionate about music education. He is currently the Artistic Director and principal conductor of the South Carolina Philharmonic Youth Orchestras in Columbia, SC, where he conducts the Youth Philharmonic.

Dr. Hanna is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities at Coker University in Hartsville, SC, where he conducts the concert band, teaches music theory and music education courses, and supervises student teaching internships. He has previously taught on the faculty at Georgia Southern University and at Newberry College. Reed earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of South Carolina, where he studied bassoon with Michael Harley. He also holds a Performer’s Certificate in bassoon from Penn State University and degrees from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
