Yuri Levitin, born 1912 in Poltava, Russia, graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory as a pianist (1935) and composer (1942), studying with Shostakovich. He has been accused of composing in a "dry and rational manner", a badge of honor during the pre "glasnost" days; prefers a "modern, non-national style". This Suite for Woodwind Quintet probably was written sometime during the years 1948-1955.
