Overture to "Zar & Zimmermann"
by Albert Lortzing (1803-1851)
Arranged for double woodwind quintet, contrabassoons, and two trumpets. The titles translates as "The Czar and Carpenter", a reference to Peter the Great, who while travelling incognito, accepted a job as a master carpenter in Zaandam, an industrial town near Amsterdam in 1698. This subject matter has been the basis for at least three operas.
