The Jolly Raftsmen
for woodwind quintet: flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon
by Christopher Weait (b. 1939)- American composer, bassoonist, and pedagogue

The Jolly Raftsman is a transcription of the second of Weait's Two Canadian Folk Songs for wind octet, published by Editions Compusic in the Netherlands. It is based on an Ottawa River song found in Come 'A Singing! Canadian Folk-songs by Marius Barbeau, Arthur Lismer, and Arthur Bourinot. On the Ottawa River, rafts of lumber were floated to sawmills guided by men perched on the logs. The music recalls the rowdy, outdoor life of the raftsman including a scene of inebriation.
