Concertino in G Major
for English horn and piano
by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848) - Italian composer
Gaetano Donizetti is best known for his operas, and composed few instrumental works. This one movement concertino is the primary concerto in the English horn repertoire.
At age 20, Donizetti composed this work for his fellow student, Giovanni Catolfi. The work was actually written for an instrument that was pitched in G (instead of the modern English horn, which is pitched in F). The form of the work is theme and variations, which allows the soloist to demonstrate technical skill. The range goes up to a printed high E for the soloist. Edited by Raymond Meylan, with a piano reduction by the editor. Orchestral material is available on hire from the publisher.
