Commissioned by the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra. The concept of a Pastorale for solo oboe and strings was part of the commission, but as the work evolved, the material no naturally generated derived scherzo-like motives and phrases, that the original pastorale idea was extended to include a brief scherzo. The work is dedicated to the composer's wife, Melanne Mueller, who premiered the work in May of 1994.
