These highly contrapuntal studies remind the composer of the “one on one” match-ups in basketball, football, and other athletic contests. As in many contrapuntal situations, when one player moves, the other one is relatively stationary.

This unusual combination of instruments coupled with jazzy rhythms and involved polyphony makes for a musically compelling experience. Good for advanced players.
