To Pauline O is a sequence based on a sequence. Each twelfth bar a note sounds from the Lauda Sion, one of the five sequences used in the Catholic liturgy. Pauline Oostenrijk requested the piece and gave the premiere. The title refers to her and might also suggest Pauline Reage's Story of O.
