Fantaisie on The Last Rose of Summer

for oboe & piano

edited by Steven Stamer.

from the editor:

A.M.R. Barret's "Fantasie on The Last Rose of Summer" is a beautiful theme and variations on songs from the opera "Martha" by Frederich von Flotow.  The centerpiece of this fantasy is Thomas Moore's "The Last Rose of Summer:, a classic Irish folk song.  Also included from "Martha" are the arias "Ach, so fromm" and "Madchen, brav und treu".  Typical of 19th-century fantasies, this piece is a showcase of gorgeous lyricism and of inventive and fun virtuosity for the oboe soloist.  It's a perfect addition to any recital and an important piece of the 19th-century oboe repertoire.
